I love that Oregon has a referendum process whereby we the people get to vote on proposed laws.
This year is especially exciting because we get to vote to legalize weed! Again. If the same passle of grower assholes causes it to fail becsuse they think their profits will go down, I will hunt them down and stwike them woughwy.
Anyhoo, follow me below the fold if you care.
Measure 86 - No
I know that a "no" vote on this one is exceedingly unpopular, but I have two major problems with this proposal.
For one thing, the supporters are on and on about how it won't take money away from other projects/needs/programs, but they want to fund this through bonds. Those fall on the general fund anyway, and the bonds for this would come out of our existing bond capacity, i.e., it would limit our options otherwise.
The second problem I have with it is this
The method for how the Opportunity Fund’s earnings would be distributed to students would be decided through the legislative process and is not addressed in this ballot measure.
Measure 86 would be protected the state constitution, but the details of its implementation are yet to be determined, by the state legislature no less.
I am always leery of futzing with the state constitution for fairly specific legislation.
Measure 87 - Yes
Currently, state court judges can teach at private schools/universities and be paid for it, but not at public schools. So this is a tweak to end a glitch in the state's separation of powers laws.
Measure 88 - Yes
This establishes that a one-year resident of Oregon satisfying all requirements can be given a Driver Card (not a "license" and it would not suffice as I.D.) without consideration as to legal status in the U.S.
The arguments against it are xenophobic hilarity.
Measure 89 - Yes
Here is the text of the measure:
The Constitution of the State of Oregon is amended by creating a new section 46 to be added to and made a part of Article I, such section to read:
SECTION 46. (1) Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the State of Oregon or by any political subdivision in this state on account of sex.
(2) The Legislative Assembly shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this section.
(3) Nothing in this section shall diminish a right otherwise available to persons under section 20 of this Article or any other provision of this Constitution.
Kind of our very own ERA. Wheee!
Measure 90 - NO
This is the proposal about jungle primaries. I don't think they've served WA and CA well. Everyone imagines Oregon is just as liberal as the day is long, but that's only true in Lane/Multnomah counties. The rest of the state can be scary red in parts.
I am also of the opinion that if one wishes to have a say in who the party nominates, one should be a member of said party.
Measure 91- FUCK YES
Measure 92 - Yes
This is the food labeling proposal. Yeah!
Measure 07-63- Yes
Bowman Museum funding -- who doesn't love museums?
